This poster, and a poster of Red Cloud, were given to John Tally and I many years ago at KBOO because of the work we do with our radio shows, "Mitakuye Oyasin" and "Indian World" and I believe a poster of Spotted Tail was given to Spider Moccasin. These posters used to hang in the old Indian school off of 23rd and Burnside in NW in the '70's. I don't remember who it was that gave them to us. I sometimes find myself staring at the details of this poster. Today, I got a wild hair to do a photo shoot of it. The last photo was done with a flash. I didn't like the coloring plus there was a mysterious white streak probably from a reflective surface on the poster. I put that in just for the heck of it. We need more leaders like Sitting Bull. Maybe they're amongst us and we don't know.

I told Rhonda about the pot leaf carving, and she suggested I put it on my blog. I used to be a pot smoker, but since I get randomed, I have stopped. American freedom, what a fucking joke. How can controlling my personal life be called freedom when GW never gets pee tested and the mother fucker is about to start yet ANOTHER genocidal war.

Anyway, here it is. I also published the other carving on this particular table. I think it might be an eye, but it is really hard to tell.

"Schools Out Forever"

About four or five years ago, my last ex and I were wandering around the rural roads of Washougal where we were living temporarily. We came across this crazy old school and for some reason, I just became obsessed with it. Like I had some sort of connection to it that I couldn't remember. I wanted to go talk to the people who lived on the property, but my ex would have none of it. We wound up driving off. I kept wanting to make a return visit, but she would have none of that either. Obviously I was in a bad situation.

I tried finding this place after I got my new camera, but couldn't find the right road. After my journey to Dougan Falls, I decided to take this other road in the chance that it might be there, and sure enough, there it was. I drove up the driveway, but no one seemed to be home. The place is still fascinating, but I don't feel as intensely about it as I did then, though as I am writing this, I am more and more. I took these photographs from the road, feeling too impolite in taking photos from the property without permission from those it belongs to. I will try to visit when they are home again, sometime, and ask their permission. It is a fascinating place.

Dougan Falls

I decided to get the 24 sticks we need for our wedding. I decided on going to Dougan Falls on the Washougal River. I had been there many years ago with the first wife and the large amount of willow there fascinated me. I've only been back a few times since, but haven't been there in probably 5 years. There are houses that line the journey all the way to the falls. There is a tiny campground and lots of willow.

I took these photographs in between choosing the sticks in which to gather and use. The first section is of the beauty and nature of water. The next bit is the journey. The big rocks I call "The Council of the Stone People." That's what it looks like. And then, of course, the ever presence of humans in nature.

To me, the city, Portland, Oregon, is beautiful, wonderful, horrific, tragic,etc. It is so many things to me all at once. It is not one simple answer to any and all questions. It is many things, many questions, answered and unanswered, questions changed and thrown away, answers changed and thrown away.

When I saw these perspectives, I was fascinated, fixated, obsessed briefly, with the strange and beautiful view of this town. Perspectives you don't see when shopping, or hiding in a restaurant, or fixated by your companion. Here, was a form of life not often paid attention to. I whipped out the camera and took a bunch of photographs, "Fiddler from the Roof" and "Peek-a-Boo" being four of them.

I have nurtured my ability to find beauty in the places where I'm at when I think of it. And I found beauty from the top of a parking lot in Downtown Portland. It didn't work so well when I, a few days later, found another parking lot and went to the top. I just didn't get the same views and attachments, fascination or obsession.

Here, in these photos, I also find tragedy. Allegations of civilization like this come at a price. Who suffered to steal the resources to create these buildings? What beauty and suffereing has been created within these walls, behind these windows? What stories can each piece tell? Where did it all come from, as it is all displaced natural resources? Who was slaughtered so this could be created? Who did the slaughtering? What Love was created enacted? What hatred and angers? And damn, we can live without all of this.

Life is interesting, but all in all, as beatuiful and tragic as these photos are too me, I could give it all up. Come to think of it, my sweetie, Rhonda, and I have been talking about just such a thing and making plans to move in such a direction.

Portland, I both Love you, and am sickened by you. Pretty much, I feel the same about alleged civilization in general.

Forward to the St. John's Bridge Series

This is Edie and Al(?). They walk across the St. John's Bridge on a regular basis. Edie was very friendly and asked that I take thier picture. Their favorite thing about crossing the St. John's Bridge is when the big trucks go by. "Al has to hold on to his hat when that happens," Edie informed me.

Walking across the bridge was at times nerve wracking for me. It is really high up! The side walk is about three and a half feet wide and the trucks go by at 35mph at least. Not all, but certain sections of the bridge will wobble slightly when the trucks go by.

I was really cautious when taking the downwards photos, often leaning over the rail.

All in all, it was an experience, and hopefully these photos will be an experince for you as well.

Rehabilitated? I didn't even know it was criminal!
